The comfort temperatures for sows and piglets differ significantly, particularly during the first two weeks of life. It is therefore important to create different climate zones to cater for the animals at their very different stages of life and performance. As a suitable microclimate can be established for the piglets in the farrowing pen using relatively simple measures, the pen temperature is primarily determined by the sow’s needs. Thus, the ambient temperature during lactation should not exceed 22 °C.42
