The following temperatures are recommended34 for the piglet nest:
- Newborns: 38–39 to just under 40 °C
- Suckling piglets: 33–36 °C, depending on the ambient temperature
The lower limit of the thermoneutral range for newborn piglets is 34 °C.35 The risk of the piglets becoming chilled is particularly high in large pens or where there are long distances between the sow and the piglet nest. The heat radiating from the piglet nest is therefore an important guide for the piglets to the area with the optimum temperature.
