Some studies suggest that the light intensity in the piglet nest is less important than the difference between the light intensity in the sow’s activity area and in the piglet nest.37, 38
Piglets may be more likely to perceive radiant heat, such as that emitted by a heat lamp,37 than heat transferred conductively via a heated metal plate,38 as in the first few days of life they prefer heat sources that emit radiant heat.39, 40
A combination of a heat lamp and underfloor heating is beneficial: the heat lamp attracts the piglets, whilst the underfloor heating helps ensure that piglets further away from the heat source do not become chilled.14
