Animal welfare planning

See - Understand - Improve

Animal welfare planning is a structured, practical approach to improving animal health and welfare on your own farm in a targeted and sustainable manner. Instead of just reacting to acute problems, animal welfare planning focuses on prevention: animal welfare is regularly recorded, risks are recognised and suitable management adjustments are planned and implemented. This process runs continuously and helps to recognise weak points on the farm at an early stage.

Animal welfare planning pays off for farmers in several ways. Healthier animals mean fewer cases of illness, lower losses and reduced use of medication. At the same time, efficiency, job satisfaction and planning reliability on the farm increase. Thanks to clear structures and simple tools, animal welfare planning can be easily integrated into day-to-day operations and helps to fulfil legal requirements for self-monitoring of animal welfare in a meaningful way.

In short: animal welfare planning helps to keep pace with the challenges, take targeted action and improve animal health and welfare on the farm.

The website offers a compact introduction to the concept, practical tips and a structured overview of available tools for animal welfare planning for dairy cows, calves and beef cattle. A thematic information centre provides in-depth information on various animal welfare topics. In addition, a newly developed analysis assistant supports root cause analyses and action planning in the event of problems in calf husbandry.

The guide to animal welfare planning explains the concept in detail and provides background information and practical tips. It is available free of charge as a PDF and is also available as a printed copy. The printed version (A5) can be ordered free of charge at [email protected].

The "Animal Welfare Planning" project is part of the InnoRind joint project. Funding is provided by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Home Affairs (BMLEH) on the basis of a resolution of the German Bundestag. The project sponsor is the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE) as part of the Federal Livestock Farming Programme, funding reference 28N-3-042-09.
