Footballers’ health

Hoof health is directly linked to the quality of the bedding (Fig. 5). The drier and looser the bedding, the lower the risk of changes to the skin on the sole of the hoof.

Target state

The skin on the ball of the foot is intact and shows no swelling (score 0).

Deviating condition

There are abnormalities in the footpads. If an increasing number of animals are observed from score 2 onwards (Fig. 23), management practices should be adjusted and these changes should be taken into account for future batches, in consultation with the rearing farm.

Measures

  • Adjusting the bedding management system

  • The drying of the litter surface can be improved by increasing the air flow rate and/or the heating output

  • Avoid using sharp-edged materials as litter

  • Consider consulting with the rearing farm, as this is where the foundations for healthy footpads are laid during the fattening phase
