Overall impression of the herd

Target state

The animals are calm, alert and respond to the presence of the carer. When entering the barn, no cries of distress can be heard; the animals do not peck at one another in any noticeable way and do not form clusters.

Deviating condition

The animals are restless, fearful or emit plaintive sounds. The formation of droppings that is atypical for their age may be caused by incorrect ventilation or heating. Restless animals may be a sign of illness.

Measures

  • Monitoring the water and feed supply

  • Checking the ventilation and heating systems

  • Checking lighting conditions. As turkeys are extremely sensitive to changes in lighting conditions, it is also advisable to check the lighting and remove any areas where sunlight might shine through.

  • If disease is suspected, consult a vet
