Feed and water consumption
The animals must be provided with water and feed appropriate to their age. Access must be guaranteed at all times. Feed and water consumption provide a good indication of the herd’s health. Sudden increases or decreases in daily water consumption, in particular, are important indicators of developing infections. In addition to disease outbreaks, changes in water and feed consumption can be caused by technical faults. Increased water consumption can also occur in hot weather.
Feed and water consumption should comply with the breeding company’s guidelines¹⁻³ or with figures from previous cycles. To ensure better comparability, it is advisable to compare only cycles from the same season. It is also helpful to laminate the guidelines and display them in the barn so that any deviations can be identified immediately.
Deviating condition
The animals are consuming significantly more or less water than the expected range indicates.
Possible causes include:
Technical issues (leaking drinkers, variations in water pressure or water level, etc.),
illness
increased salt content in animal feed
high temperatures
Measures
If feed and water consumption is lower than usual, or than that specified in the forms, the equipment should first be checked, followed by a thorough inspection of the animals. The animals’ state of health, the behaviour of the herd and the consistency of their faeces can provide initial indications of an infection. If in doubt, it is advisable to consult your adviser or the vet.
