New training course "Slaughter close to the farm in dialogue"
On-farm slaughtering offers the opportunity to reduce transport and slaughter-related stress by avoiding live animal transport. A distinction is made between slaughtering in the farm's own approved slaughterhouse ("one-room butchery"), fully mobile slaughtering in a mobile slaughterhouse, where all slaughtering work takes place on the farm/pasture, and slaughtering on the farm of origin (so-called "partially mobile slaughtering"), where the animals are stunned and killed on the farm of origin and the dead animal is then transported to a nearby slaughterhouse for further slaughtering work. The amendment to Regulation 853/2004 makes it possible to slaughter up to 3 cattle, 6 pigs, 3 equine animals or 9 sheep or goats in one slaughter process by slaughtering on the holding of origin. This type of slaughter requires authorisation, notification of the slaughter to the competent veterinary authority and the presence of an official veterinarian.
Since 1 August 2025, the training course "Slaughter close to the farm in dialogue" has been available free of charge. The training course uses various videos and documents to provide a structured introduction to the topic. For example, it provides an overview of the types of slaughter, authorisation procedures and slaughter processes for slaughter on the farm of origin as well as the legal basis. A collection of other projects in the subject area and existing guidelines is also provided, and users can use a short learning check to independently test their knowledge of the content taught.
The course is subject to continuous further development - feedback, suggestions and further documents or reports can be sent to Dr Philipp Rolzhäuser at any time.
