The EU project BroilerNet aims to strengthen the European broiler sector within the global market. To this end, the most pressing challenges facing broiler farming in terms of sustainability, animal welfare and well-being, as well as animal health and management, are to be identified. This will take place within both national and international networks, in which farmers, advisors, members of the value chain, integrated producers, scientists, veterinarians and other stakeholders in the broiler sector will collaborate. Members of these networks will exchange ideas on solutions and innovations across Europe. This will take place through straightforward dialogue between academia and industry, as well as between EU countries, so that the sector and all stakeholders can learn from one another and support each other.

BroilerNet will also collaborate with existing EIP-AGRI Operational Groups working on broiler chicken farming and provide a platform for knowledge exchange. Operational Groups are small project groups seeking solutions to specific challenges (further information on EIP-AGRI can be found here: www.youtube.com/watch.

The innovations and experiences gained through the project will be published and disseminated in a variety of ways and in multiple languages to reach as many stakeholders as possible across Europe.

The project is funded by Horizon 2020 funds from the European Commission. BroilerNet is coordinated by Stefan Gunnarsson from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Skara. The project consortium comprises scientific and industry partners from 13 European nations. Germany is represented here by the Institute for Animal Welfare and Animal Husbandry at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) and the Federal Association of Rural Chicken Producers.

FLI project staff members Julia Malchow and Karin von Deylen have already begun to establish a national network and look forward to hearing from other interested parties who would like to contribute their expertise to BroilerNet. Participation in the overall project is not mandatory; it is also possible to participate in specific sub-topics only. You can find the latest information on BroilerNet here: www.broilernet.eu and also on Twitter and LinkedIn.
