Experts discuss animal welfare issues

The Animal Welfare Network in the DLG Spotlights at EuroTier digital 2021

The Pig Welfare Competence Centre, part of the Fokus Tierwohl network, took part in EuroTier digital 2021 with three panel discussions. These were moderated by Dr Thorsten Klauke (Secretariat of the Pig Welfare Competence Centre, North Rhine-Westphalia Chamber of Agriculture).

Old building, new build, conversion – a stable with a view?

The requirements set by the Borchert Commission, the Technical Instructions on Air Quality (TA Luft) and the Animal Welfare and Livestock Management Ordinance present many pig farmers with significant challenges. How can these be overcome in the future? What opportunities do alternative housing systems offering outdoor access offer? Experts from the construction advisory services of various state agencies discussed potential solutions with a representative from the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

Participants in the discussion:

Bernhard Feller, North Rhine-Westphalia Chamber of Agriculture, Advisor on Housing Methods, Technology and Construction in Pig Farming

Dr Kirsten Kemmerling, BMEL, Livestock Strategy Unit

Christian Meyer, Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Agriculture, Futterkamp Teaching and Research Centre, Advisory Services and Training in Pig Farming

Dr Eckhard Meyer, Saxon State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology – Agriculture Department, Animal Husbandry Division, Specialist in Pig Farming
