Pigs – Innovative feeding concepts

Online networking meeting on 4 March 2021

When it comes to pigs, feeding is one of the priority topics for leading farms. Prof. Dr Georg Dusel from TH Bingen was invited to give an online lecture on this topic on 4 March 2021. In his presentation on "Innovative feeding concepts for better animal welfare in pig farming", he outlined various aspects of how feeding contributes significantly to the long-term health of the animals and that this is the only way to successfully keep long-tailed animals and ensure the longevity of sows. Prof. Dusel emphasised that even young sows should be fed with "swellable" feed. This allows the stomach and intestines to become accustomed to consuming large amounts of feed. This later benefits the lactating sow, as it is then able to consume large amounts of feed even when its energy requirements are high. Other aspects that were eagerly inquired about by the 36 participants from the pig impulse farms included roughage presentation, acidification of feed, use of essential oils and use of vitamins.
